Ingredients
- 1-3 bunches green onions
- Paper towels (for the Paper Towel Method)
- Zip-top bag
- Jar or glass container
- Water
- Rubber band or plastic bag (optional)
Instructions
- Paper Towel Method: Loosely wrap the green onions in a damp paper towel and place them inside a zip-top bag. Seal the bag partially or leave it slightly open to allow some air flow. Label the bag with the current date and store it in the refrigerator. Remember to re-moisten the paper towel with water when it starts to dry out to maintain freshness.
- Jar Method: Fill a jar with at least half a cup of water and place the root ends of the green onions into it. Cover the green onions with a plastic zip-top bag or the original grocery bag, securing the base by sealing the bag most of the way or using a rubber band to trap moisture inside. Store the jar in the refrigerator and change the water every few days to keep the onions fresh.
- Window Method: Place the root end of the green onions in a jar filled with at least half a cup of water. Keep the jar on a windowsill where it can receive indirect sunlight. Replace the water every few days to prolong freshness and maintain the quality of the green onions.
Notes
- Always check the green onions for signs of spoilage, such as sliminess or an off smell, before use.
- Changing the water regularly is crucial to prevent bacterial growth and extend freshness.
- Do not fully seal the bag in the Paper Towel Method to allow a bit of air circulation, which helps prevent mold.
- The Window Method is ideal if you plan to use green onions frequently and want to keep them accessible and fresh at room temperature.
