Description

A refreshing and vibrant Grapefruit Orange Sangria perfect for warm-weather gatherings, featuring a crisp Riesling base combined with fresh citrus fruits, mint, and a splash of club soda for fizz. This sangria is lightly sweetened with homemade simple syrup, making it a balanced, flavorful drink that is easy to prepare and sure to impress your guests.

Ingredients

Scale

Sangria Ingredients

  • 1 bottle Riesling wine (750ml)
  • 12 – 15 mint leaves, plus extra for garnish
  • 2 tablespoons simple syrup (see below)
  • 2 ripe grapefruits
  • 2 ripe oranges
  • 2 limes
  • Club soda, for topping off

Simple Syrup

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup water

Instructions

  1. Make Simple Syrup: Combine 1/2 cup sugar and 1/2 cup water in a small pot. Bring the mixture to a full boil, stirring until all the sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and allow the syrup to cool while preparing the fruit.
  2. Prepare the Fruit: Slice the grapefruits, oranges, and limes into chunks or slices that will easily fit in your carafe or pitcher, making sure they can be easily served later.
  3. Layer Fruit and Mint: Begin layering the carafe by adding a few pieces of grapefruit, followed by orange slices, and a few mint leaves. Lightly muddle the mint leaves before adding them to release their flavor.
  4. Build the Layers: Repeat fruit and mint layering until the carafe is about half full with fruit.
  5. Add Simple Syrup and Wine: Pour 2 tablespoons of the cooled simple syrup over the fruit, then pour the Riesling wine over the top until the carafe is nearly full, leaving some space for stirring and club soda.
  6. Chill and Marinate: Place the carafe in the refrigerator for 2 to 3 hours or until well chilled. Stir gently every 30 minutes to help meld the flavors.
  7. Adjust Sweetness and Serve: Taste the sangria before serving and add more simple syrup if desired. Pour into individual glasses, top with a splash of club soda, and garnish with fresh mint leaves.

Notes

  • To deepen the mint flavor, gently muddle the leaves before layering into the sangria.
  • Adjust the sweetness by varying the amount of simple syrup to your preference.
  • Use chilled Riesling and chill the sangria well before serving for best refreshment.
  • Serve immediately after adding club soda to maintain its fizz.
  • Fruit chunks can be adjusted for size to suit ease of serving and drinking.
