Sausage Roll Ingredients
- 2 sheets puff pastry, thawed
- 1 pound sausage meat (pork or herb-blend)
- 1 small onion, finely grated
- 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg, beaten (divided for filling and brushing)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh herbs (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
- Prepare Sausage Filling: In a mixing bowl, combine the sausage meat, finely grated onion, breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, and optional fresh herbs. Mix thoroughly to evenly distribute all ingredients.
- Prepare Puff Pastry: Unroll the thawed puff pastry sheets on a clean surface and cut each sheet into two long rectangular pieces.
- Shape Sausage Logs: Take the sausage mixture and shape it into logs that fit along the length of each pastry rectangle.
- Assemble Rolls: Lay each sausage log along the center of the pastry rectangles. Fold the pastry over the sausage and seal the edges by brushing with beaten egg. Press the edges with a fork to ensure they are closed.
- Slice and Arrange: Slice the sealed sausage rolls into 2-inch pieces and place them seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet.
- Egg Wash and Bake: Brush the tops of the sausage rolls with the beaten egg to achieve a golden, glossy finish. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden brown.
- Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and let the sausage rolls cool slightly before serving warm to enjoy the crispy pastry and flavorful filling.
Notes
- For extra flavor, add different herbs like sage or thyme depending on your preference.
- Ensure the sausage meat is fresh and of good quality for the best taste.
- Allow the pastry to thaw completely but keep it cool to make it easier to handle.
- These sausage rolls can be made ahead and reheated in a low oven before serving.
- Adjust seasoning to taste if using pre-seasoned sausage meat.
